greetings

I belong to several non profit groups, and most of them give both awards and recognition.
admittedly not on the scale of the sca, for the awards, but the verbal recognition is much more frequent .
as has been noted, it has everything to do with participation, have you not read the ongoing discussions about wanting people to participate more, somewhat by traveling to other parts of the kingdom ?

many people have a love hate relationship with sca awards anyway, if you don't actively try to earn awards then most people ignore you, or figure you already have the awards, if you do try to actively earn the awards then odds are your labeled as a " cookie monster " and again your not put in for the awards. so how does that make it a positive motivation to join, if all it says is that someone " might " maybe , sometime in the future , think you deserve an award ??? will that possibly happen after you pay the 1st year membership ? or will that far off maybe, possibly, might , happen after your 50th year of paying a membership ??

maybe I'm just slow, but I still don't see how all those maybes are an incentive to pay for a membership : /

Be Safe , Be Happy, Have Fun .

I don't think this has anything to do with participation... but awards are something unique to the SCA.. so I believe that this is an incentive to join...

        greetings

as to that, most groups dont allow you to participate if your not a member .
should we then no longer allow participation untill people have paid their $50.00 and purchased all period garments, and equipment ??
and contracted to fill an office for at least 2 years ???

according to the survey, the thing that motivated many people to join , was new friends and having fun , even the $5.00 per person per event non member surcharge ( nubie tax, low income fee ,what ever you call it ) wasnt listed as a motivation to join .
( while it has been mentioned as a cause for not attending events )
it is motivation if your desire is to see the sca continue, with no one stepping up to be officers, the sca would dry up and blow away quickly, either that or change to all decisions coming out of california .....

the only definition under which i can see " fixed " as it applies to this issue would be subtitled " castrated ". charging people more and more money to play and recieve recognition is a slippery slope that ends with people walking away and spreading nothing but bad images of the sca in their wake = ( how is that good for the sca as a whole ?

        > I don't know of any other group /club that gives out awards without being a member.. I believe this is one area that needs to be fixed.. What else would motivate a person to join.. Being an officer isn't motivation, just work.. Grin
