[Ansteorra] First SCA clothes (was: maybe an answer to recruitment problems)

My first event was a coronation in the Middle Kingdom.  Their 40th!!!!!
I met Count Owen (Prince at the time), got a HUGE hug from him just before the coronation and honestly been in love with him ever since.
Anyway:  clothes:
The clothing was borrowed, a yellow and mauve dress from the early 13th century, English I believe.
The young lady was happy to assist me, since she was informed I had never been to any SCA events.    I had never met this lovely lady, and yet one phone call from my boyfriend had her with 2 dresses to pick from.  She brought them to coronation, helped me dress and offered wonderful words on the SCA.
I have since learned that the dress I wore is the most common one loaned from her.  And, it is well made, and beautiful.
I now make my own, and loan out my stuff as much as possible.

My first event was Torre's 12th night.  I wore a red cotton/poly "granny" gown and brought melemane feast gear.  I had many laughing "compliments."  The people were very gracious about it, so I ended up staying-- for 20 years.

I'm reminded of a story someone told in a previous incarnation of this discussion. She was very new, but had a copy of the "Known World Handbook". One of the suggestions for first-timer clothes was making a T-tunic out of an old bedsheet. So she did. Unfortunately, the KWH article *didn't* specify it should be a solid color, so she showed up to her first event in a T-tunic with Snoopy all over it.

My first outfit was some black sweatpants and a red v-necked long sleeved woman's blouse, which I was using for choreographed duels with a fellow student at Rice University before I'd ever heardof the SCA.
