[Ansteorra] First SCA clothes (was: maybe an answer to recruitment problems)

During Senior Week in 1986, I showed up at school on Costume Day dressed
like the Pope. White cassock and stole, the zuchetta...the works. Fast
forward to my first SCA experiences. I wore my Pope costume to a fighter
practice and a newcomer's revel in 1987. For my first weekend event (Quest
for the Clover), my mom made me a tunic out of a solid brown bed sheet. I
don't remember what I used for a belt, if anything, and shoes were probably
my grey and blue track shoes. I wore that tunic to one more event, and then
I had a black monk's habit by my third event (the Crown Tourney in Raven's
Fort when Hector won). I got some good use out of that habit for about a
year, before I stopped being Brother Linus and moved on to more
secular-looking stuff. I still have the habit, but I haven't worn it in
years. It's a bit of a museum piece to me now. I don't know what happened
to the brown tunic. Or the Pope costume, either.

Outside of the Pope costume, I don't remember anybody in the SCA looking at
me funny in those days.
