Done properly, one of the best ways to increase the shire bank account is to
run a successful kingdom-level event. If you have prudently budgeted, you
have scheduled to just about break even with a small profit cushion based on
a conservative turnout estimate. While it isn't a good idea to soak your
guests by building in a large profit into your event budget (especially a
kingdom event), groups aren't expected to lose money running kingdom events
and the kingdom actually likes it if you make some profit so that the
kingdom gets a percentage to help cover kingdom expenses. So, if you have
conservatively planned to make a small profit or at least break even with a
relatively poor turnout and have a much better than expected turnout, you
can easily wind up with a considerable profit. For example, I know of
events where we budgeted for $10 a head and a turnout of 150 and then 300
people show up. Then again, we also ran a niche known world event where the
site fee was around $30 and expected maybe 100 people total to show up based
on previous years attendance. We were shocked when over 200 people just
from this kingdom showed up and the total turnout was around 300.

Incidentally, when we had such unexpected profits, we tried to donate some
of the proceeds to various other entities within the kingdom; ie the college
of heralds, funding incidental expenses for the SCA demo at TRF, and making
donations of gear and funds to other groups.

One thing we've done in Mooneschadowe is talk local restaurants. If like
many groups do, you go out for a group dinner following an activity,
differing restaurants might offer something back to you for guaranteed
business...

For example, Mooneschadowe goes to Mazzio's after meetings, and if we
collect receipts, and send them to the corporate offices, Mazzio's will
give us back 15% of our groups receipts once per month.

They used to do it weekly (although only at 10%), and for a while we were
collecting $50-$80 per month, mainly because we had some awesome people
who'd always turn the receipts in.

We are still getting $20-$30 per month, and every little bit helps.

Pizza Inn or Pizza Hut will allow non profit groups to serve pizza in their
restaurant for 2 hours and a percentage(20%?) of the proceeds go to your
group. Fun to do in garb!!

Greetings to fellow fiber-lovers!

Look for my "Distaff Spinning in the hand" class at the very end of the day
at King's College.  I am working on putting the handout up on the site;
however, it is truly a hands-on class.

This class is especially suited for those who are new to spinning, or have
tried their hand at drop-spinning and found, much to their chagrin, that
they are better at the dropping portion than the spinning.

You don't need to bring anything - you will start by making your own distaff
& spindle, then walk through the basics of drawing, drafting, twisting, and
some simple plying - without ever letting go of the spindle.

Children are welcome in the class - most youth have the dexterity required
around the age of 8-10 to pick up spinning. Young children should expect to
be given a set of (teaching) cards, and set to carding wool for the
spinners!

In Service to the Dream,
H.L. Willoc mac Muiredaig
