Fall is in the air - that time of year when the evening air turns crisp and
the creatures of the forest make preparations for the winter to come. The
start of autumn is marked by the equinox on a.d. Kalends October (September
23) in the wee hours of the morning. This day is one of the two days of the
year when the hours of night equal the hours of the day and marks the
transition from summer to fall. In England and Ireland, the equinox would
signal that the quarter day of Michaelmas (Sept 29) was nigh. Michaelmas
was traditionally celebrated with a well-fattened goose which had fed well
on the stubble of the fields after the harvest. In many places, a there was
also a tradition of special large loaves of bread made only for that day.
By that time the harvest had to be completed and the new cycle of farming
would begin. It was a time for beginning new leases, rendering accounts and
paying the annual dues.
