Greetings fellow Ansteorrans,

I know many of our fine populace is gearing up for Gulf War. I,
unfortunately, will guarding our homelands and sending all of my thoughts
east in support of all of you who are going. I wish you a safe journey and
a lot of fun.

I wanted to provide, for those interested, some information for you
regarding some classes being taught by the Society Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion Officer, Lady Astridr Zahra Ymirsdottir.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Gulf Wars 2020

"Office hours" will be held from 9AM to 10AM on Thursday, March 19th, in AR
Messy. Please stop by and say hello!

Inclusivity for Event Stewards
AR Textiles Fine
Monday, 3/16, 3PM (1 hour)

In this class, we will discuss site selection and evaluation, addressing
accessibility concerns, potential pitfalls to avoid when planning an event,
and examples of the many ways in which members of the SCA have successfully
employed inclusive practices in their events. There will be a discussion
portion, so please bring your questions and we can explore them as a group.

Identifying and Addressing Cultural Appropriation
AR Textiles Fine
Monday, 3/16, 4PM (1 hour)

In this class, we’ll identify some of the different ways that cultures
interact, including cultural appreciation, exchange, assimilation, and the
problematic appropriation. We’ll talk about why cultural appropriation is
so harmful, in both a modern and SCA context, and explore some ways of
self-evaluating and addressing our own behavior to avoid it. There will
also be a discussion portion, so please bring your questions and we can
explore them as a group.

Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Definitions and Concepts
AR Textiles Fine
Thursday, 3/19, 3PM (1.5 hours)

We’ll talk about what diversity, equity, and inclusion actually look like
in an SCA context and go over the basic concepts of privilege, unconscious
bias, and microaggressions. If you’re curious or have questions, please
consider attending!

To prevent this message from being far too long, I'll include the text for
a hand out I created earlier this year in another email.
Again, be safe, enjoy Gulf War, travel safely, and have a lot of fun!

In service to our Dream,
