Don is indeed a title for "lord" technically you or I could call
ourselves Don and ask to be heralded into court that way but we would
piss people off and Ansteorra Law says /"It shall be recognized
tradition in Ansteorra to address members of the Order as "Don" or
"Doña.""/ and personally I think it would be disrespectful for you or I
to use the title Don.
Because the Order of the White Scarf has spread to so many other
kingdoms the title Don is basically only used for members of that order.
Other words recognized by the SCA as substitute titles for Lord are:
Domn
Dominus
Signore
Seigneur
Señor
Senhor
Senyor
Kûrios
Tiarna
Tighearn(a)
Arglwydd/Boneddig/Bonheddwr
Hlaford
Herr
Gebieder
Herre
Heera
Herre
Drottinn
Pan
Pomestnik
Herra
Gyula
Zoti/Bujar
Efendi
Reb
Sayyid
Arya
Chu
-san
So we could use any of those titles if we wanted. But after getting our
collective butts chewed out by a crown and Star Principal herald because
we thought we would like to have a term used by tradition to indicate
members of our order in the same way the White Scarf has Don and in the
same way the Centurions are often addressed as /Centurion whoever / I
don't think that is butt chewing that the CAO wants to bring on again
soon by suggesting ourselves that we be addressed by any other singular
title.
If the archery community wishes to start using one of the words that are
allowed, say for instance Arya, I do not think any CAO would be offended.
