[Ansteorra-archery] light bow

The drawback to a youth bow is that as the person grows they could easily outgrow the bow once their draw length is too long for it. The longest bow I own is a 20 pound wood bow (first bow I ever made) and young people use it all the time at our archery practice in Austin. The best way to pick a bow for a youth is to have them draw it to the length they are now. If they are comfortable with it more than likely the bow will grow along with them. Honestly I am surprised how small some of the children are that can use a light weight adult bow. If you are willing to consider a wood longbow give Sarah at Kees longbows a call at 512 573 5761. Made in Texas with the best warrantee you will find anywhere.

You might also include the term "youth" bow in your searches- many bows for
the 15 and under age group are made in the 15-25 # range, for developing
muscles as they get older and more experienced. (even in our college archery
class the weights peaked out at 30- there were many recurves available in
the lower ranges; only 2 of the 15 people in the class opted for the 30's.)
Hope this helps! Pyro

We plan on her using the 20# bow for Target Archery.

I originally purchased a 30# bow for her, and that I could use in combat
archery, as I progress in the SCA, but she can't pull it back like I thought
she would be able to.. So, I'll use it for Target Archery as well for
awhile.

I had looked in the local pawn and gun shops before, and found nothing
there. But have continued to scout those places.

Thanks for the other suggestions

Arden

If this bow is for a youth, you may want to consider a traditional wood longbow. The cost would be much less for a bow you may not use more than a couple of years.

I would have an archery question:
I am trying to find a used recurve, center-shot, 20# bow, about 60?.
I have looked on Ebay and online for a couple of months now, and can?t find one.
Of course, I?ll keep checking Ebay (yes, and checking out the description good, specifically for limb twist and cracks?)
But I was wondering if our archers of Ansteorra might know of anything, or have one they might wish to sell?
Thank you,
?

"Youth" bow often means 24" or 26" draw however.  This is not only
uncomfortable for an adult to hold but you lose ~5.6% of the draw energy
for every inch you take off it.

"Youth" bow may also be designed for a lower brace height, and that can
result in wrist-slapping for an adult.
