Actually it is just about that simple. There are some fine points about
learning range safety rules on the field, but other than that it's mostly just
a different weapon.

As for crossbows vs bows, crossbows are much easier to learn and be effective
on the field. An experienced target archer could learn to use a combat
longbow effectively in a reasonable amount of time, but anyone who can shoot a
rifle can be effective with a crossbow. Crossbows also hit harder and get
your shots called more often.

The biggest barrier to being on the field is usually getting the equipment
together. Combat crossbows in particular are available but you need to be in
contact with the right people. Bolt/arrow construction is not hard, but
requires some expertise.

There are various strategies for archers on the field but it's not necessary
to learn them before going out and doing it. The simplest is to think of
yourself as a 15 foot spear. Form up in your company behind the spearmen and
look for openings.

Shield/archer teams are also pretty simple. Find a shieldman who can block
arrows, stand behind them, and find targets.

There are many more fine points to being effective on the field, but the best
way to learn them is to be out there where you can see it for yourself.

Your best shortcut to learning all this is to attend Ffynnon Gath's War of
Ages and Bordermarch Fall Melees. Both of them are melee events and will have
combat archers in attendance. Most combat archers will be happy to talk your
ear off with advice and war stories, and tips on equipment.

I hope this helps.
