Lord Eric,
Again it is difficult to advise you what to do without seeing
the bow but if you have been using the bow for that long if
it were going to fail it would have likely already done so.
Basically each archer is responsible for their own equipment,
the inspection by your marshal is to check for visible problems
with the archer's equipment and let them know about it. If you are
already aware of the problem then it would be up to you whether
you use it or not.
I don't foresee any problem with making the rawhide patch the
shop suggested as long as don't remove any more wood then
what would be necessary to rough the area to be repaired.
Now that we know where you are maybe someone with experience
close to you will make contact and give you a hand. Otherwise I
would bring it to an event seek out one of our Arc d' Or and
ask if they might be able to either assist you or point you to
someone whom can help.
I hope that has been helpful, I'll ask around myself and see if there
is anyone within that area whom you might contact to assist you.
Regards,
Ironwyrm

Lord Ironwyrm.
Thank you for your reply. I am in Hellsgate. I have continued to shoot the longbow in my backyard since the damage 12 yrs. ago, but have not brought it out to a Ansteorran event because I felt it might be deemed "unsafe" as of the damage. I shot it exclusively in Drachenwald (pre damage). If I do the rawhide repair as the archery shop suggested it will make the damage unviewable. Once the rawhide is in place it cannot be removed for inspection so I think you can understand my quandry.
Thanks
Lord Eric

Lord Eric,
This is not a question that can be answered without inspecting
the damage to the bow. I would find a competent bow maker
to access the damage before attempting any repair. Sight
unseen I would heed the shop's suggestion not to try to attempt
to shave or reshape the bow because that would change the
dynamics of the bow and unless you know what you are doing
you could ruin the bow rather than save it.
I don't think it would be safe to use the bow without having it
checked out, but I tend to lean toward safety first myself.
If you would state your location someone with experience
making bows might volunteer to have a look at it for you.
That is the best advice I can offer on line without actually
seeing your bow.

I own a longbow that has a chip out of it on the lower limb. This damage was thanks to my nephew who was 12 at the time. It looks bad, but has not caused any ill effects to the bow. The shop I bought it at in England told me not to do anything with it. Not to try and shave or reshape it. They said it was safe but that if I was concerned to do a period style rawhide repair. My question is will it be considered "safe" for SCA use? Thank you
