[Ansteorra-archery] Period Long bow

I wish I knew how to go from tree to bow as all I know is getting good planks and cutting them into staves. Agree on the overdraw as we test everything to 28 inches unless it was made to go longer and even in some of them if we do not feel it is safe to go longer we only mark it for 28. The one thing no bow maker will guarantee against is an overdraw. Even the best wood judge I know considers herself lucky if you can get four planks out of a large stack of wood.

greetings
thank you for the input; )
but I never buy Osage online. I hand pick my staves, when
I'm not teaching how to read the bark on living trees, or teaching how to take a
bow from tree to range.
one secret about Osage, especially for novice bowyers,
don't grab the stave with the smallest growth rings, or the largest growth
rings.
smallest are a real pain to actually get down to just one
growth ring for the entire bow. and large growth rings can be weaker
.
also if you want a perfectly straight bow with perfectly
straight limbs, don't use Osage, few staves are " perfect" most will produce "
character " bows.
that being said, I am currently shooting a 42 # @ 28
" character Osage selfbow . it twists and turns side to side, but the limbs do
not rotate.
I am thinking about making a bamboo backed Osage as
my next bow though ; )
on " over draw" always be careful , selfbows aren't
very forgiving about that, if they were tillered for a certain weight @ 28
" , then 28 " is what they perform best at, and anything more increases the
chance of damaging the bow. my Osage was tillered at 32" , but my
arthritis says I'm not going to be pulling heavy bows anymore, and even
complains about 42 # @28 , I'm hoping that with practice , and using the therapy
exercises, I will be able to shoot a full royal round soon ;
)
where are you located? and how much are your Osage staves
running ?
Be Safe , Be Happy, Have Fun .

>I have only worked a handful of Osage so I am not an expert on the wood. I found the biggest problem I had with it was because of fear of making too much of an adjustment at one time. The wood costs more so you want to be careful. It could have been because of fear but I found it did not take a lot of tillering to make a significant change in the bow. The Osage staves I looked at on the webpage looked they will take a lot of work to make into a good bow that bends equally. The grain on some of them was nice while others I would have found questionable. It seems what you are paying the high price for is because they were all cut by hand from trees and not in planks at a lumber yard. They can make a pretty bow but I would be hesitant to shoot most of them since some looked like they would twist. I have seen staves where the grain looked perfect and they still blow up when you put them on the stick to mark them for adjustments. In my opinion
you would be taking a big risk a small chance of success. If for no other reason than the price of the wood I would suggest backing an Osage bow. It will allow for a slight overdraw as well as fly faster.

>>$108 really isn't a bad price for a hand made longbow. I've seen them go for a good deal more than that. Only problem is its not a period longbow. The shelf that is cut into it disqualifies it from being used to score any period shoots. And unless you're taking it out to hunt with the poundage is pretty high for
