Well, I also have mixed feeling about the NEED to use an index finger in
such a manner.

I will agree that it is not a must. You can practice and learn to do with
out.

I also respect that there are many different shooting styles. Robin is
usually pretty mobile and runs around a lot. I can see how having that
finger to hold the arrows while running is useful.

There are many different bow styles. If you are not using a bow with a
shelf then the bow hand is much more important. Robin is a accomplished
bowyer and uses bows that he himself has made by hand. There are "period"
style bows with any shelf at all. I applaud his desire to go that one step
further as a recreationist buy using a bow made of period materials in a
period style.

As far as right list or wrong list... As is I think pretty apparaent from
his message, this is a continuance of a discussion Robin and I were having
on another list. I suspect that he just picked the wrong list address out
of his addressbook.

I disagree about needing to use the bow index finger to hold the arrow
while the archer is in motion...

I have been training to move while loading and shooting either forward
or backwards or side ways with a full gauntlet on my bow hand. Have no
problem with it!

Second thing this is about combat and not static should be moved to the
Ansteorra Missile list and not on the static archery list.

guantlet on the bow hand with the powers that be, I'd like to encourage them
to make such a change. The use of the bow hand index finger to hold the
arrow while the archer is in motion is a great advantage. If it is felt that
a guantlet is need for safety reasons then I would ask for either an
allowance for the index finger to slip out from behind the shell or perhaps
a guantlet that only covers the three lower fingers and allows the index
finger to be exposed.
