Fast epee verses heavy rapier - It was my understanding that depending on the 
'rig' an epee can be as heavy as a schlager. So a minimum weight would negate 
that argument.  Which leaves the 'a schlager "looks" more period' defense.

Really?  ;-) I am rather shocked that you would think this needs to be 
explained to me. I must have miss lead you in some way.  I agree with your 
statement but also feel that 'unnecessary' limitations should not be placed on 
an event.

That's fine. Make it a judged tourney. That was not the issue. The issue is 
should we start having heavy only tournaments which would exclude a portion of 
the rapier community who either don't own a heavy rapier yet or don't want to. 
I have heard several fighters say that fighting HR messes up their LR and vise 
versa.  There are other reasons that fighters don't have HR.  Why not leave it 
fighters choice?

"Show, grace, and honor" - I think I can do that with an epee in my hand.  
Putting a HR in someone’s hand is not going to make them showier, gracefuller 
nor more honorable.

Then make it fighters choice. If needed you could set up the list so that those 
who have stated that they wish to fight HR only are only paired with those who 
can or will fight HR. If the tournament comes down to only one person who only 
wants to fight HR and some who only want/can fight epee then have some other 
means to continue the fighting (chess) or make the default LR.  The only time 
you need to limit something to one style or the other for the tournament is for 
melees.


Question:  "True art?"  Are you also planning on insisting on period fabric and 
styles of dress, period shoes, helms instead of masks, and period speech?  The 
weapons we use and the way our arms move as a result should only be a part of 
what makes a more period style, it should not be considered the most important 
part.
