I've read that if you put a drop of ammonia on the lichen, the purple-
dye-producing ones will turn red, but I can't confirm this with 
personal experience.

Oh, and Clare, the alcohol certainly made a difference in the color 
of the alkanet dye bath.  I'll find out tomorrow how it dyes; right 
now I'm just soaking it out.
