In the section on dyes in Woven Into the Earth, Textiles from Morse
Greenland by Else Ostergard (which was released in English translation
last fall) there is mention of purple thread. Of course the garment it
was in was blue. There is a fairly long discussion of sewing techniques.
"Among 'invisible' seams belongs all sewing of main garment parts, ..."

I remember being told by a colonial reenactor that "they" fussed about
using colored thread for sewing claiming that sewing thread was brown or
natural colored. That is until someone took a damaged archaeological
piece apart and found that the sewing threads that had been protected
from the elements matched the fabric.
