[Bards] Question on performance judging forms

I've judged a few bardic competitions in which the form has been used, and some in which it was abandoned completely. I like the form largely because it is a good way to give feedback to the performer. As a performer, I appreciate getting the form back after performing and seeing a breakdown of where my strengths and weaknesses are. What I do find quite often as a judge, is that I want to (and do) change point breakdown. I'll keep a 50 point total, but will often redistribute the points allotted to each area. So I might do something like this:

Documentation: 5 points (instead of 10)
Authenticity of Piece/Style: 10 points
Complexity/Difficulty: 5 points
Technical Skill: 10 points
Presentation and Interpretation: 10 points
Overall Impression: 10 points (instead of 5)

Documentation is almost a yes/no for me. I'm not judging the documentation, I'm judging the performance. I grade documentation on the levels of a) No Documentation Provided (0 points), b) Verbal Documentation Provided (1-3 points), c) Written Documentation Provided (3.5-5 points). If I want to get a judge to seriously look at documentation for an original piece in period style, I'll enter it in a static A&S competition. (Now who would be so crazy to do that? :) )

In service,
HL Alden Drake

Subject: [Bards] Question on performance judging forms

In our continuing effort to improve bardic and performance, please critique the judging forms used in Kingdom and at Gulf Wars. The judging forms for performance can be downloaded in either MSWord or Adobe and can be found at: http://laurel.ansteorra .org/ALWForms.htm

What do you see as the strengths of the forms? What could be improved? What is missing?

The Performance Judging Form is on the agenda for our next Laurels Retreat and your input will be very helpful.
