[Bards] Questions, Answers, and Topics (oh my!)

I'm REALLY looking forward to all the roundtable, but....
 
There's a couple of things I'd like to propose.
 
First, that we try to agree to an agenda for the roundtable, so that we can
at least TRY to keep on task.  Some things I'd like to see on the agenda:
Since I straddle two worlds, I would like to hear ideas of how we can help
strengthen the sense of community within the performance arts as a whole.
How can we best get word out to those who want to learn performance arts,
whether it be in bardic, instrumental, etc., that the best way to learn is
to talk to the bards that you admire the most (I was handed a wonderful bit
of insight one time when Master Robin gave me a nicely concise critique of a
performance which helped me let go of me and give in to the whims of the
character).  How do we make bardic competitions more "public" without
hamstringing the judges ability to observe/hear the performer?  
 
There, that's three.
 
Second, that everyone realize that we are all trying to strengthen the
bardic (and performing arts) community in Ansteorra.  Changes that might be
made, whatever they are, should be slow and deliberate.  
 
I am no expert in this area, by any measure, and I'm looking forward to
spirited discussion from those who attend.

Comments to the point, and good, sharp points -- which beg the question,
"Who judges the Judges?"
 
I for one, can't tell you if someone was flat, off pitch, etc. I doubt an
Elizabethan expert could accurately judge, on its specific and cultural
terms, and Anglo-Saxon skald.
 
And how much documentation is a judge supposed to be able to read,
understand, and be able to tell if it's even good scholarship. BEcause there
is a LOT of bad scholarship out there -- what are the standards of that?

The judges on American Idol do it all the time with feedback like "you
rocked dawg"...or "it was a mess".
I would think you could get a lot more out of someone saying "your pitch was
flat" or "you were off the beat" or "your story was too long and
complicated"

Why would having a form or not affect what feedback I give?  "You need to
work on your diction" or "Your poem doesn't scan" work exactly the same
whether there's a form or not.  Feedback does not require assigning numbers
in categories.  
 
Most helpful feedback I've gotten as an Ansteorran bard for more than 1/5 of
a century has been from one-on-one discussions. 
 
The kingdom Eisteddfod was judged without forms for years.  The judges got
together and talked about what they heard, exchanged ideas, and came up with
a winner.  Feedback was offered to anyone, and could be quite useful and
pertinent.
