Greetings M'lord,
Might a I recommend a starting place?
If you live near the Beaumont area, you could come out to Thursday evening 
fighter practice at Rogers Park, after 7 PM, on the corner of Dowlen Road 
and Gladys Avenue in the west section of Beaumont, there to see fighters 
geared up in their equipment, practicing. Many of them have learned how to 
make their own, right in the garage.
Just walk up and introduce yourself. Any of them will be glad to try to 
answer your armor questions.
Many of these fighters have made their own in the "armory" garage at the 
home of Simonn of Amber Isle who teaches them how, or figures out together 
with them as they research.
