ES - defender culture

Just had a thought, triggered by this thread and period accounts of
tourneys and get-togethers.  It might be more authentic for the 'town
square' or 'culture camp' not to be judged by a panel but to be
appreciated by the general populace.  Or am I being naive to think that
the competition aspect might not be vital?
