I remember, years ago, when my father, having recently become a
firefighter, had to respond to small hunting cabin on the outskirts of town.
Eight people had gone to sleep in there, being kept comfortably warm by the
heat being given off by an ordinary barbecue grill. Eight bodies were removed
from the cabin, several days later, when they were missed by their family
members. They literally went to sleep and never woke up, due to the carbon
monoxide fumes from the smoldering grill. The experience changed my father in
some small way, as did other instances in the his career as a firefighter,
but I will never forget the deflated look in his eyes when he came home that
day. So many lives lost to a simple mistake.
I was very saddened to hear of this news from Estrella, and my prayers
are with the families of those now lost to us. Let us all learn from this, so
that such a wasteful loss shall never occur again. I don't think a night will
go by at Gulf Wars, when I won't think about this terrible loss, before I
shut my eyes.
In humble service,
Jen
