Also, if iris bulbs are crowded together, they will send out a rhizopus (or
big root) underground and just start sending up stalks, reproducing
asexually.  To get flowers you have to separate them a little which
encourages them to flower and reproduce sexually (more flowers!).  They
flower best in small clumps of 4 or 5 stalks.  Not trying to be
gutter-minded, just botanically practical.  :)
