Plus, switching out batteries on a Prius generates more toxic waste than
the total amount of polution generated in 100,000 miles by a Hummer.

Subject: Re: [Steppes] OT Hybrid Cars

My mom has an 07 or 08 Saturn VUE hybrid, and she LOVES it. She gets
great
gas mileage, and was able to make it all the way from El Paso to here on
basically just over a tank of gas.
Here are the drawbacks I (and she) have seen about it though:
-there is NO spare tire!!! The battery cells are in the compartment
where
the spare would normally go, so in the little space where the jack would
normally go, there is a little air pump! *lol* They qualify this with
giving
you automatic roadside assistance, but is still pretty stupid. So she's
looking into a roof-top spare holder. (not sure whether this is the same
in
the other hybrid cars)
-while the battery cells are generally covered by the manufacturers
warranty, should that expire, the cells each will cost you about 5k to
replace, and that is not just Saturn.

I will be getting a new vehicle in the next few months, and was looking
at
hybrids as well as regular vehicles, doing all kinds of comparisons and
research. What we came up with is that with the difference in cost, it
would
take about 6 years just for the savings in gas to pay for the price
difference.

But mom's VUE is kinda cool.
