[Hellsgate] Sunday Fighter Practice

I see that this discussion has become a bit lively. Vivat. I think that we're
starting to think of fighter practice as a monotone concept instead of taking it
as the whole concept. Fighter practice is 1) designed to aid in recruiting. -
We need to be visible and have people want to come approach us and see what's
going on. We need to start posting banners and bring out our fancy chairs and
make fighter practice an event. Not everyone is interested in fighting, so
perhaps we need to start bring some crafts to fighter practice. 2) fighter
practice is designed to aid fighters get better so that they can attend
tournaments and win. - If fighters show up to practice and only the same two (or
sometimes none) show up every time, they will not improve. We need to keep the
fighters interested and motivated to keep coming to fighter practice. Ioannes
is right, without fighters we are just a social circle.
I think that we can multitask and support our local group and Bryn Gwlad. I'm
new to the SCA, but it is larger than just our group. In order to develop a
more well rounded Scadian we need to intereact with our group and with the
larger group, as well.
Daria has set up a craft night on Tuesdays, but participation has been a bit
sparse lately. Probably due to Gulf Wars. I will take this time to welcome
anyone to come out to our house and learn various crafts, such as ceramics,
brewing, cooking, sewing, weaving, et all.
If you need help in making garb, then this is a good time to come out and learn
how to make period garb.
Timur has offered to teach anyone to make their own shoes, and I plan on taking
him up on this offer after I have foot surgery.
We are having a demonstration in Saledo that is looking to be an event to rival
any that has been held in Ansteorra. We will have have craftsmans such as
Master Max who will have his forge set up, an artisan, Linda, will set up a clay
wheel and make pottery, Timur will set up his shoe shop, and many others.
Robert Westryman and Aubelin Alexandre will be running the equestrian events at
the Saledo Demo.
We have many artisans from our local group and from Bryn Gwlad who will be
performing.
My point is that for our group to survive and thrive we need to get support from
our higher group and we need to support them. We need to recruit outside of our
comfort zone in order to grow. I would suggest that our next demo be on Fort
Hood, so that we can recruit a younger crowd into the SCA. There are thousands
of military men and women who are dying to hit someone with a stick, or stab
someone with a rapier.
Fighters are what what attacts people to the SCA, the crafts and events are what
keeps them interested.

True, that. I'm in a unique situation given where I live. Liam,
Helene, and I are also the only Hellsgaters out in Bryn Gwlad on
Tuesday nights.
