The vine staff was carried by centurions during
the imperial era.  A baculus was a staff of authority
carried by officials down through the middle ages.

Bishop Odo is shown carrying one in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Order of the Vine Staff

The only staff names registered are for heralds.
It should be possible to register a period object
like this as an order and it has been done in
the past in SCA.  Most historical order names I
have found involve saints.

Did his Majesty wish the vine staff depicted on the
badge rather than a plain club?  I knew he had
considered this award for quite some time.
