Given the history of the Ansteorran Heralds' Handbook -- to wit, there
have been announcements of work on a new edition since Tadhg Liath's
tenure, and that's six Star Principal Heralds ago [1] -- I strongly,
strongly suggest something down towards the two-page end.
Off the top of my head, my instant reactions are
- who to talk to about situations and how to contact them
Specifically, for locals, regional, Star, and other locals
- duties of the office, cribbed and condensed from the Anst. Heralds
Admin Handbook (itself cribbed by Francois from the SCA CoA
Admin Handbook)
- my little note on the final duty: know when to quit
- other sources of information: what they're useful for and how to
find them
- the Ansteorran heraldry Web pages
- the SCA Inc heraldry Web pages
- the Academy of Saint Gabriel
- the Ansteorran Gazette
- the Ansteorran Heralds' mailing
- the SCA Heralds' mailing list
- alt.heraldry.sca but NOT rec.heraldry
- Heraldic symposia, Ansteorran and Known World
- Heraldic consultation tables
- Emphasize, repeatedly, the importance of *asking* for the
inexperienced herald: we love to talk, we'd love to go into details,
just reach out ("if you DON'T call or e-mail someone, you certainly
WON'T get an answer")
[1] to the point where I suggested that the real retirement title of
Star Principal Herald was "in charge of the Herald's Handbook", upon
which they're never heard from again. Francois was the first one in a
while to avoid that trap, and we'll just regret it for YEARS.
