Annes, be aware that just looking the word up isn't enough. "Gate" has to
be in the possessive form - "edge of the gate" is another way of expressing
this. And in most languages, that means the form of the word itself
changes.

Also note that modern languages may or may not correctly reflect medieval
language forms.

In Old Norse:

hlið - gate, gateway

[It would be <hli{dh}> if your email gacks at the special characters - the
{dh} or ð is the sound of the "th" in the English word "this"]

   borgar-hlið - castle gate, fortress gate
   <borgar-hli{dh}>

grind - (1) a gate made of spars or bars, a fence; in the plural a pen, fold
(3) haven, dock; (4) store-houses.

   grind-hlið - barred gate
   <grind-hli{dh}>

   Valgrind - the gate to Valhöll, lit. "corpse gate".

jaðarr -(1) edge, border, selvage (of cloth, of a sail, tent, edge of the
hand , etc.); (2) in poetical usage, a prince, lord
<ja{dh}arr>

So, in Old Norse, "Gate's Edge" would be something along the lines of:

Hliðsjaðarr
<Hli{dh}sja{dh}arr>

Grindarjaðarr
<Grindarja{dh}arr>

Now the next step would be to see if this bears any resemblance whatsoever
to something that could have been used as a place name in period.
