The reference is to a rose that looks like a "modern"
rose, i.e. the one you grow in the garden, not the
heraldic rose.  Multiple rows of petals surrounding
the center.  I realize that it doesn't show up well
over long distances, but there are registered devices
with garden roses.

Here is an example:
