I haven't found <Liliana> in any of my Italian sources at home or at the
SCA or the MNA websites.
The best I can translate De Felice Nomi s.n. Liliana: it is a recent
fashionable name resumed from English <Lillian> or <Lilian>, a
hypocoristic of Elizabeth, corresponding to <Elisabetta>,
asserted for its exoticism and euphony, and in part for one questionable
connection; of popular etimology with white, 'liliale ', pure
like the 'giglio'(lily) or also with the Latin lilium 'giglio'.
So I believe that <Liliana> is of modern usage in Italy. I have not
found the name <Giglio> or <Giglia> at either website or my stuff.
I did find the feminine given name <Gilia> at both websites, but I have
no idea if it is connected with <Giglia>. The articles were Feminine
Given Names from the Online Catasto of Florence of 1427 (MNA) and Rhian
Lyth's Italian Renaissance Women's Names (both sites).
