R. Daniel is correct. 

The field generator is controled through a radioactive decay clock. When the
half life of Newbium Heradicom is exceeded, the gem turns black and then you
must report for Carousel. Or a member of the Militant Arm of the College of
Heralds is sent out to gather you in.
