Lots of reasons are possible:
1. So it can be his, rather than a differenced version of his father's.
2. So nobody can register his father with a label and a different field. 
(Two points of difference from Simon; one from Zane).
3. Because it's an authentic, period thing to do.  Many families in England 
bear arms that are a differenced version of the original coat.
4. To declare officially his lineage, as opposed to merely assuming it.
5. To have the rights to it despite any later changes in the SCA armorial 
rules.

But the one that matters most is:
6. Because he wants to.  Take the nice man's money.
