Close (and maybe you have and I'm just misunderstanding you).

Concrete examples might help:

(Fieldless) A roundel per pale azure and Or.
--> a round circle INSIDE that dotted-line box, left half blue and right
half yellow.
vs
Per bend azure and Or.
--> dotted-line box drawn in, the left half OF THE ENTIRE BOX blue and
right half yellow.

Or how about:

Azure, on a roundel Or a mullet sable.
--> black star on a yellow circle on a blue field
Vs
Or, a mullet sable and a bordure azure.
--> black star on a yellow field surrounded by a blue bordure

If you draw both on a round field, it's VERY HARD to tell them apart! But on
a square field, it all becomes clear.

The square box is for purposes of the badge form only. The submitter can
display their armory in whatever shape they like (how do you think we manage
the rectangular banners and such?), as usual.
