Paleography is a major issue in genealogy as well.  Handwriting from colonial America can be a task to read until you read enough of it to learn how.

The Gothic handwriting is one reason the SCA doesn't have more German source material.  There is the language but German isn't that hard to learn.  The other hurdle is the abbrevations in the entries.  Those can be a sublanguage of there own and the older entries are in Latin shorthand.
