Same rules for all symbols like letters, numbers, Norse sun crosses, etc.

1. The symbol must be period.
2. It cannot be the sole charge in the armory.
3. If not a type registered before (rune or letter in an alphabet not
previously registered, symbol not before registered) you must document
it to prove it is period and compatible with SCA heraldic practice.
4. If used in a manner that means something intrinsically (a word or
phrase, so this applies to letters/runes) the translation and possibly
meaning in English must be supplied with the submission.

That's a loose list drawn from the RfS, AH and past Laurel rulings.
But it's accurate.

For examples of what's been registered, look in the Ordinary under
Symbol. Follow the registration date to the applicable LoAR to see
what was said about the charge at that tine; never assume that it
passed easily. :) The category in Laurel precedents that lists such
things is Symbol (cross-reference Letter ad Number in older
compilations), which is where you'll usually find information on those
submissions that were returned that contained symbols.
