HERB - Antique Roses

Clare,

I'm glad to hear that the Rugosa should do OK. I like rose hips, and if I
recall, they make a pretty good hedge, too. I'd like a rose hedge someday
<G>. I haven't seen ANTIQUE ROSES OF THE SOUTH, I'll have to watch for it.

Well, the loss of the plants isn't really the reason, that's part of gardening
(though both Gulf war and Pennsic hit me pretty heavily this year). But a lot
of my garden plans involved being in this house for several more years, and
now we may move in the next year or so. That's good, because then I should
have the room for more ambitious plans, but there's not much point in starting
madder plants, for instance, if I won't be here 3 or 4 years from now to
harvest them <G>. And the next owners may not want beds taking up most of the
back yard, so I'm planning to move the perennials herbs and flowers to the
beds along the fence (maybe if they look ornamental, they'll leave them <G>).
For now, no long term projects, other than getting cuttings of everything I
can to take with me. But there are plenty of short term projects I can work
on.

Oh, there was one nice surprise. I've had awful luck with thyme plants, all
of them curled up and died within days of transplanting. On a whim, I
planted a few thyme seed in the hole of a concrete block I'd filled, and one
sprouted and grew in spite of being mostly ignored. The day we left, I forgot
to move the soaker hose over the block. When we got back, the soil was dry as
dust, but the thyme plant was still alive! All I can think is I was over-
pampering the other plants.
