HERB - sun & heat resistant plantings ....

i'm the opposite situation ... a home-owner that has areas not suited to the 
level of grass maintanence i believe in - leave it alone, mow it now and 
again, waste minimal city water on it, if it dies so it goes.  

after this hell-summer have a major sun-blasted area i want to turn into 
something else besides the less than desirable opportunistic grass that is 
invading ... so, any recommendations for good sun & drought resistent 
plantings that would be useful - herbs, vegitables, ....
