HERB - Moving plants and gardens

A friend of mine had worked for years on her house and garden. Her yard
was a showpiece of beautiful plants, beds, trellises, a pond with water
plants and coi, terra cotta steps and decorative fixtures everywhere.
Her husband got a new job and they transferred to Florida, and sold their
house. She called me and said to go get anything I wanted out of the
yard before the realtors started taking people through it, so another
friend of mine and I took shovels and empty pots over there, and dug up
several different plants, roots, bulbs, etc, being very careful not to
leave holes or gaping wounds in the landscape. Most of them made it,
several didn't, but I have quite a few new additions to my yard because
of this. And boy, am I glad we made that trip. When the new owners
moved in, they took out every bit of decorative plantings, even the rock
and herb garden on the front slope of the yard (too steep to mow) and
planted grass! I couldn't believe the amount of work they did to take
out low maintinance plantings and put in fescue! I am just sick every
time I drive by there, and then I'm very glad to have the few plants I
did get. (Boy, if I had only known, I would have been back over there
many more times digging up those pesky plants for those people). Oh,
well, not everyone appreciates the beauty of a garden. Sigh.
