HERB - dye plants

I have a dyeing question.

I have weld seed which I plan to start this fall, but I really don't know how
many plants I'll need.  Has anyone else tried this?  How many weld plants, at
a guess, do I need for a decent dye bath?  Almost the only information that I
have on growing this plant is that it's a biennial, so any suggestions or
comments would be appreciated.
