Yes, the watermelon is a medieval European plant, it appears in illuminations
in the 14th century TACUINUM SANITATUS, for example.  The round, icebox types
appear to be closer to the medieval types.  True European cantaloupes and
"Eastern" melons (a variety of melon that has a yellow rind when ripe) and
also period.  Muskmelons, which most Americans call canteloupes, are New
World, but the difference between them and true canteloupes is pretty minor,
for our purposes.
