Greetings from Jin Liu Ch'ang

The Charlemagnes list was very interesting. If you want some more lists I can give you some. Thomas Tusser wrote a book called "Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry" in 1557. It is a kind of wierd, but at the time very popular, book about farming being written in rhymes but it contains several lists (which may include the same plants several times). He divides his lists mostly by uses. They are:
Seedes and Herbes for the Kitchen
Herbes and Rootes for Sallets and Sauce (which includes the short list entitled "These buie with the penie Or looke not for anie)
Herbes and rootes to boile or to butter
Strowing herbes of all sortes
Herbes, branches, and flowers, for windowes and pots
Herbes to still in sommer
Necessarie herbes to growe in teh garden for physick, not rehersed before
Some of these lists are quite long (up to about 40 herbs) but I can submit them if there is interest.
