Greetings
Ldy. Aoibheil of Ath-Sithe asked about cardoon -- I didn't check today
but I remember getting very good answers about cardoon and artichokes
from Cariadoc's Miscellany (on line linked to SCA home page)
Re: Beans
I found two references that are useful:
J. Smartt. 1980. Evolution and evolutionary problems in food legumes
Economic Botany 34: 219-235
and
Hopf, M. 1986. Archaeological evidence of the spread and use of some
members of the Leguminosae family. pp. 35-60 In: The origin and
domestication of cultivated plants. C. Barigozzi editor. Elsevier, New
York.
Since we were talking what beans are in the Period references, first is
mainly useful for the list of species and comments on nomenclature
The second has maps of archaeological sites where various Old World
legumes have been found--gets us a list of cultivated legumes from
Europe. Also an assertion that the major 5 are pea, lentil, broad bean
(=fava) bitter vetch and chickpea.
If you're at a place too distant from Ag school libraries to get these,
drop me a note privately and I'll make you a copy. I'm pretty mobile
this time of year (computer goes with me) so it may take a bit, but
generally I'm reliable.
AND if any of you are going to the War of the Lilies in Calontir this
week, I'd love to meet!
