I grew up in NYS (with winters to rival Indiana). We had both a spot of
mint in the garden, and mint running wild in the lawn. (It was never
planted in the garden in my lifetime...it just grew there.) My aunt had
"wild" (read: unplanted, uncared-for) mint at the border between her "yard"
and the wild field behind the house. Where it grew in the garden, we
picked it when we wanted some. Where it grew in the lawn, we mowed it.
(Yummy smell) Where it chose to grow "wild", we were much happier to see
mint than ragweed. :-> All of these mints thrived without attention -- my
aunt's --which had to compete with waist-high grasses -- occasionally got
shoulder-high on me...& I'm 5'9"! It got along
fine with Maples, and all our other trees, too, though it did seem to try
to grow its way to sunlight....
