suggestion ... extended exposure to moisture laden air will make them 
difficult / impossible to light.  i keep them in a gasketed glass jar ... 
especially the open packages.  also, when using them, invest in a decent 
burner that keeps the charcole up and away from surfaces (they can 
produce a lot of heat) ... and let a bed of ash build up in the burner, makes 
for a perfect insulator between the charcole and the burner
