HERB - First you take an egg.....

Hi folks,
I just screwed this up myself and Clare kindly corrected my mistake,
so I thought to write the list a little note, especially for people
new to e-mail list to help you out with the "WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING?"
panic that often ensues when you've not gotten your daily fix of
"Hortulus" or if the list just plain seems abnormally quiet.
At the risk of correcting the list adminstrator, the BEST way to
determine if you are on the list is not to send a "who" command
to the majordomo address. The information you receive when sending
a who command is often lengthy and tedious, listing every address
of every member on the list (there are exceptions).
The BEST way to find out if you're subscribed to a list would be
to send a "which" command. Here's an example, using my e-mail
address:
To: majordomo at ansteorra.org
From: g.walli at infoengine.com
Subject:
which
Notice that the subject line is blank and that the only
information in the body of the message is the word "which".
Sending a "which" command essentially asks the majordomo
server "Which lists at ansteorra.org am I subsribed to?
Oh, by the way, use the address in the From: line of this
message to help you determine who I really am."
The result that you get back from majordomo looks something
like this (again using me as an example):
Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 14:00:44 -0500 (CDT)
To: g.walli at infoengine.com
From: Majordomo at Ansteorra.ORG
Subject: Majordomo results
Reply-To: Majordomo at Ansteorra.ORG

The string 'g.walli at infoengine.com' appears in the following
entries in lists served by Majordomo at Ansteorra.ORG:
List Address
==== =======
h-needlework-digest g.walli at infoengine.com
herbalist g.walli at infoengine.com
sca-cooks-digest g.walli at infoengine.com
Now this is what it tells us. First, Jasmine is on far too many
lists for her own good. Second, she's subscribed to three of
them hosted at the ansteorra.org site. Currently these include
the SCA Cooks list and the historic needlework list (she's
subscribed in digest format for both of those). Also, she's
subscribed to the Herb List, which is called "herbalist" in the
message.
Sorry for the repetition to people who already know this, but
for those of you who don't and for those of you who need the refresher,
it might help a little.
