It's usually used as an oral anesthetic, not an external. My husband swears
by clove oil when his teeth hurt.. he sets a clove directly on the sore
tooth and "sucks" on it, for lack of a better term. He also sucked on cloves
to help stop the pain after his wisdom teeth were extracted.
