HERB - garlic questions

Can anyone give me a quick lesson in garlic purchases? I've
got a flower bulb order coming in soon, but it just came to
me that I hadn't thought about garlic bulbs for fall planting.

Never having researched garlic, I'm stumped by the difference
between "hardneck" and "softneck" varieties. Do we have
any research indicating varietals in period cooking or have
most people just used any ol' type?
