Noting that modern 'aromatherapy' (using essential oils) is not period,

The two I've found useful is the Encyclopedia of Essential Oils and _The
Essential Oils Book_ by Colleen K. Dodt; I've also
used Jeanne Rose's Aromatherapy book, but with great caution. (Those
who've used Jeanne Rose's _herbs and Things_ can understand my hesitation
to take her at face value.)

Oil of Rose is one of the oldest. Oyle of Spike is cited in some period
recipes, which means Oil of Spikenard; the common equivalent would be our
modern lavender. Oil of Cloves I've also seen cited.

Storey Publishing's _Whole Herb_ web site has a section on body care, with
materials on Aromatherapy: http://www.wholeherb.com/HAB.HTM

If you know of any, I want their addresses! (*smile*)
