Well, if Gerard is any indication, they used it a bit in balms
and ointments. It wasn't uncommon to see it used in facial
treatments. Oddly, this practice continues into the present day.
In the south especially, but also in my family (!), a child's
"pee diaper" (i.e. one in which no feces has been deposited)
is considered one of the best treatments for skin disorders.
The same is considered true from the perspective of many
HIV-positive, active-AIDS patients with disorders of the skin.

>I know that they only had to smell the sweetness in urine

Actually, there's evidence that they tasted it to find out. I
only have secondary references to this, though, no primaries.
