HERB - HERB:

I realize that this question has probably been asked about a million 
times, but could someone please tell me where I can find reliable 
primary resources on  period uses of herbs?  I am trying to get a 
serious body of research to study from for my local guild and I'm having 
a difficult time figuring out where to start.
