Actually, I've been working on-and-off on a project like that for some
time; right now it's a whole mess of typed up notes, about 60 pages of
them. The origin of renaissance roses. Their symbolism in the Middle
ages and renaissance. A listing of "period" roses (known to have existed
before 1600), where they came from, what they look like, how to grow them,
and any interesting historical tidbits about them. A list of places to
find these period roses and instructions on growing and caring for them,
including information on making rose standards, rose trellisses, and
walkways covered with roses. Recipes for rose hip, rose water and rose
dishes, including rose hip soup, some tantalizing middle eastern dishes,
rose cake, and all sorts of confections. Instructions for making rose
cold cream, rose vinegar, rose liqueur, rose soap (both hard and liquid),
rose shampoo, rose jelly, and rose oil.
Right now it's to the point where I just have to /try/ all the recipies
that aren't mine, to make sure they work, and then do the tedious work of
typing it into a form that someone besides me can make sense of. :) But
if anyone's interested, I can post the section listing period rose types &
their info when I get home tonight. And the bibliography I used.
"The Medieval Garden" has some excellent info on roses in the middle ages
and how to replicate "medieval" gardens with roses in them.
Take care and stay rosy,
