Have you tried washing your hawking gloves?  I have several pairs of
leather work and driving gloves which I wash regularly & dry in the
dryer.  I started doing this after a bag of stored leather pieces got
moldy.  It was either wash it out or pitch the lot, so there was nothing
to lose.  It worked.  After all, leather is processed in water.  If
they're dyed, be careful not to put them in the same load with anything
that could be damaged if the dye runs.
